Review: Monsters of Men

Title: Monsters of Men

Author: Patrick Ness

Publisher: Candlewick

Date (to be) Published: September 2010

Synopsis: (from author’s website)

Three armies march on New Prentisstown, each one intent on destroying the others.

Todd and Viola are caught in the middle, with no chance of escape.

As the battles commence, how can they hope to stop the fighting? How can there be peace when they’re so hopelessly outnumbered? And if war makes monsters of men, what terrible choices await?

But then a third voice breaks into the battle, one bent on revenge…

Why Did It Come From? Amazon

Why Did I Choose It? I’d read the first two in the series.

My Review:

Sadly this book was somewhat of a disappointment.  I really wanted to love it as I enjoyed the first two immensely, but this book just kept dragging on and on.  It was interesting to see things from the point of view of Viola, Todd and the Spackle, but outside of that, I didn’t really care what happened to any of the characters.

The ending when it finally did come about was very predictable, overly sappy, and just didn’t leave you with the same feelings the first two did.

I do suggest you read it if you’ve read the first two just to find out what happens, and to learn more about the Spackle, but don’t expect to finish it and feel this was an awesome series.
